There is documented evidence of farm worker life on some ranches in Point Reyes National Seashore: living with rats, skunks, moldy walls, and rotten floorboards all while being intimidated into silence by an angry boss as a consequence for asking for better conditions.  

This material is sensitive, however, and needs more investigation.
